Ive just scrolled through Facebook, to come across a video of a man wearing a scarf on his head, talking to a camera in a language I do not understand, to then see him being blown up. The cameraman is in pain, you can hear him whilst the camera is covered in soot and dust, and the scream of a woman is heard in the background. I proceeded to read comments on this video, reading things such as “the screams are the best part” or calling these people ‘scum’. With a heavy heart I have begun to realize, our world is filled with people who hate one another for reasons I cant even begin to comprehend. Religion is different to everybody; it comes in different forms and ideas due to different cultures around our world. Humanity is a collective term for human beings. We come in many colours, sizes and we all have many different ideas. We have been blessed with compassion, understanding, tolerance, mercy, consideration, benevolence, generosity, pity, dignity, and we all bleed the same colour, RED.
I am just a girl, from a ‘first world’ country, whose eyes have been sheltered from the rest of the world’s problems. I am not the smartest, nor am I fully informed on everything going on in this world. I live a life where everybody around me is worried about money, their future of whether they are going to own a house, people wondering what the next best makeup look is, alcohol and drugs, sex and money. I see on a daily basis, people living only for themselves, and their own selfishness. I too am guilty of that. But in saying that, in this lifetime, I have studied and experienced some of the most amazing things we as a collective of people have attempted and succeeded with. First of all, Men and Woman are considered equals in some countries around our world. Second, racial divides between black and white are diminishing. Thirdly, we have accepted people for WHO they are not WHO they love, meaning, we can love who we want, whether it man/woman/intersex/other. We as a world have come together and accepted one another. We have done some of the most beautiful things, and yet we have caused some of the most catastrophic things. War against one another due to a religious belief that differs to our own, or greed and power controlling our ways of life. Hitler murdering innocent people because he wanted to have the power over the world, USA and Islamic states and their ongoing wars, the 9/11 attacks and most recently the 14/11 attacks.
It hurts me deeply to know, even only on a shallow level, the horrible things we as a collective of beings can do to both one another and the world we live on.
This is an open letter I wrote, just after I heard of the devastation in Paris.
Dear ‘leaders’ of our World,
I have a question for you. What does the word leader mean to you? Not in a dictionary form, but in a personal form, something you identify with?
To me, being a leader means “somebody who has the characteristics and qualities of a good heart. Somebody who has good intentions for his/her people. Somebody who wants to make a change in our world in an admirable way. Somebody who respects the opinions of others, and take into consideration their ideas. Somebody who cares deeply about others.”
If you think back to when you were a child, your ideas on what a leader is would be similar to mine, because you have not yet corrupted yourselves, you have not yet made the worst mistakes of your lives.
I don’t see our leaders of the world in a positive light, because I can see the darkness and destruction that follows. There is a lust for more power, more money, and authority. You take advantage of our trust. We are not in the dark ages anymore, so why is it okay for you to order our armies to fight one another for your own personal gain, or even in the name of religion?
When has it EVER been okay to go and murder innocent lives just to get a message across? Do you not have any remorse?
I have only lived a short life of 22 years so far, and I feel the pain deep within my heart for the thousands of people who have had to die for reasons I don’t believe to be right. Nobody has the RIGHT to decide on who should be able to live and who should die, nobody.
The day you wake up and realize that you are wrong in the things you have done, there is nothing you can do that will ever fix the utter pain and devastation that you have caused thousands, if not millions of people in our world.
And to be honest, I do hope it haunts you for the rest of your days, because it will haunt us for the rest of our lives, too.
Why can we not set aside our differences for once, and rejoice in the life we are all blessed with, try to understand each other and respect cultural differences. I don’t believe ANY God in ANY religion is about war and death. God is a man of love and compassion, a man of respect and knowledge. I am not part of any religion in all honesty,
